 Which Side Faces Out? UV-Protected Polycarbonate Panel Marking and Installation Errors Buyers Should Prevent

A greenhouse customer assembles their new kit. The polycarbonate panels look identical on both sides. They install them, fill the greenhouse with plants, and everything seems fine. Two years later, the panels are yellowing, becoming brittle, and light transmission has dropped significantly. The product is failing prematurely — not because the material was defective, but because the UV-protected side was installed facing inward.

This is one of the most common and most preventable failure modes in polycarbonate greenhouses. And it is a packaging and documentation problem, not a materials problem.

Why One-Sided UV Protection Creates an Installation-Control Problem

Polycarbonate panels for greenhouse use are manufactured with a UV-protective layer co-extruded onto one side of the panel. This layer blocks the UV radiation that would otherwise degrade the polycarbonate over time. With the UV side facing outward (toward the sun), the panel’s service life aligns with the supplier’s warranty period — confirm the specific warranty with your panel supplier. With the UV side facing inward, the panel is exposed to unfiltered UV radiation and will begin to yellow and embrittle well before the warranty period.

The problem is that the two sides of a PC panel are visually identical. A homeowner assembling a greenhouse from a flat-pack kit cannot tell which side has the UV protection unless the manufacturer has marked it clearly. And “clearly” means a marking that survives the entire supply chain — from the PC panel factory, to the greenhouse factory where panels are cut to size, to the retail box, to the customer’s backyard.

If the marking is ambiguous, missing, or removed before the customer sees it, the probability of incorrect installation is high. And once the panels are installed, the error is not visible until the panels start to degrade — by which time the damage is irreversible.

Protective Film Printing, Labels and Factory Marking Options

Manufacturers have several methods available to mark the UV-protected side. Each has advantages and limitations:

Printed protective film — The most common method. The factory applies a temporary protective film to the UV side of the panel, with text or arrows printed on the film indicating “UV side — face outward” or similar. The film protects the panel surface during transit and cutting, and the printed marking is visible at the time of installation.

The limitation: the film is temporary. If the customer removes the film before reading the marking (which is common — people peel protective film instinctively), the marking is gone. If the greenhouse factory removes the film during panel cutting and re-applies a new film without printing, the marking is lost.

Edge printing — Text or symbols printed directly on the edge of the panel (the cut edge, visible when looking at the panel from the side). This is more permanent than film printing because it is on the panel itself, not on a removable film. However, edge printing may be small and hard to see, especially after the panel is installed in the frame.

Adhesive labels — A sticker or label applied to the UV side of the panel. More visible than edge printing but can be removed by the customer or can fall off during transit if the adhesive fails.

Color-coded film — Using a different color of protective film on the UV side (e.g., blue film on the UV side, clear film on the other). This is the most immediately visible marking but adds cost to the film and may not be available from all PC panel suppliers.

The best approach is usually a combination: printed film for primary communication, plus edge printing or a label as a backup. The more redundant the marking, the lower the probability of installation error.

How Incorrect Orientation Can Happen During DIY Assembly

Even with clear marking, incorrect installation can occur in several ways:

The customer removes the film before checking — Protective film is designed to be removed, and customers often peel it off as soon as they unpack the panels, before reading any instructions. If the only UV-side marking is on the film, it is gone.

The panels are cut to size at the factory, and the marking is on the offcut — If the greenhouse factory cuts full-size PC panels into smaller pieces for the kit, and the film marking was only on one end of the full panel, some cut pieces may end up with no marking.

The instruction manual does not show UV orientation — Many greenhouse instruction manuals show panel installation steps but do not explicitly call out the UV side. The customer follows the diagrams, installs the panels, and never realizes there is a correct and incorrect orientation.

The panels look identical after film removal — Once the protective film is off, there is no visible difference between the UV side and the non-UV side. If the customer paused between removing the film and installing the panel, they may not remember which side was which.

What the Instruction Manual and Panel Labels Should Show

To prevent UV-side installation errors, the product documentation should include:

  1. A dedicated step in the instruction manual — Not a footnote or a warning box, but a numbered assembly step that says: “Before installing each panel, verify the UV-protected side faces outward. Look for the printed marking on the panel edge/film.”
  2. A visual diagram showing UV orientation — A simple cross-section drawing of the panel in the frame, with an arrow indicating which side faces the sun. This should appear at the panel installation step, not in a general safety section at the front of the manual.
  3. Panel-level marking on every cut piece — Every piece of PC panel in the kit should have a UV-side marking, not just the full panels before cutting. If the greenhouse factory cuts panels, the marking must be re-applied to each cut piece.
  4. A note on the hardware pack or first-page instruction — “Check UV side orientation before installing panels. Incorrect installation will significantly reduce panel life.” This communicates the consequence, not just the instruction.
  5. Batch and date marking for traceability — If a batch of panels has a UV-side marking problem, batch and date information on the panel edge allows the supplier to identify which kits are affected and issue a recall or correction notice.

Sample Checks Before Artwork and Packaging Approval

Before approving the greenhouse kit for production, the buyer should check the UV-side marking on the actual sample:

  • Is the UV side marked on every panel piece in the kit? Not just the full panels — every cut piece, including small pieces used for vents and doors.
  • Is the marking visible after the protective film is removed? If the only marking is on the film, what happens after the customer peels it?
  • Does the instruction manual explicitly call out UV orientation? Or does it assume the customer will figure it out?
  • Is the marking in the language(s) appropriate for the target market? A marking in Chinese on a product sold in Europe is not useful.
  • Can you, as the buyer, easily identify the UV side from the marking? If you cannot, the end customer certainly cannot.

UV-side installation error is a product documentation problem, not a materials problem. The PC panels are manufactured correctly — the UV layer is there, on one side, as intended. The failure occurs because the marking and instructions do not adequately communicate which side faces out. This is within the buyer’s control to prevent, through packaging artwork, instruction manual design, and sample verification.
