Greenhouse Foundation and Base Kits: What Buyers Should Decide Before Ordering the Frame

A greenhouse is only as stable as what it sits on. The frame can be engineered to the highest specification, but if the foundation settles unevenly, the door will not slide, the panels will not fit, and the frame may twist enough to break panel seals. Foundation choice is not a site preparation afterthought — it is a product configuration decision that affects what goes in the box.
Why Foundation Choice Affects the Product Configuration
The foundation determines three things about the greenhouse product:
- Anchoring method — A greenhouse on soil can use ground anchors driven into the earth. A greenhouse on concrete needs anchor bolts set into the slab. A greenhouse on paving stones may use a weighted base or adhesive anchoring. Each method requires different hardware, and the product kit may or may not include the appropriate anchors.
- Base kit necessity — A base kit (a metal frame that sits between the ground and the greenhouse frame) serves multiple functions: it adds height, provides a level reference surface for the frame, and creates a barrier between the aluminum frame and ground moisture. Some greenhouses are designed to require a base kit; others can be installed directly on the ground. This changes the product configuration and the kit contents.
- Leveling approach — On soil, the ground can be leveled by digging and filling. On concrete, the surface must be flat and level before installation — if it is not, the frame will twist. On uneven paving, shims may be needed. The instruction manual needs to address the relevant leveling approach for the target installation surface.
If the buyer does not decide which foundation configurations the product will support, the factory will pack a default set of hardware that may or may not match the customer’s installation surface. The result is customers who receive a product they cannot properly install.
Base Frame, Ground Anchors and Hard-Surface Fixing Options
The accessories that relate to foundation choice fall into three categories:
Metal base kit — A galvanized steel or aluminum frame that sits under the greenhouse frame. Functions: raises the greenhouse above ground level (reducing contact with soil moisture at the bottom of the frame), provides a level reference for frame assembly, adds structural rigidity at the base, and provides anchoring points for ground anchors or bolts. The height and material of the base kit vary by product — confirm the actual specifications with the supplier. The base kit may be included as standard or offered as an optional accessory, depending on the product line.
Ground anchors — Metal stakes or augers driven into the soil, attached to the base kit or frame. Suitable for soil or lawn installation. Typically included with base kits for soil installation. Not usable on concrete or paving.
Hard-surface fixing kit — Anchor bolts, expansion anchors, or adhesive anchors for installing on concrete or paving. May include a rubber or foam seal strip to sit between the base kit and the hard surface (to prevent water ingress and provide minor leveling compensation). This is typically an optional accessory, not standard, because most home garden greenhouses are installed on soil.
For buyers planning a product assortment, the question is: does the standard kit include the base kit and anchors? Or are they separate purchases? And if they are separate, does the instruction manual tell the customer what they need for their specific installation surface?
Leveling and Squareness Requirements That Affect Panel Fit
The greenhouse frame is designed to be assembled on a level, square surface. If the foundation is not level, the frame will twist during assembly, and the panels — which are cut to precise dimensions — will not fit properly into the frame slots. The door track will not be straight, and the sliding door will bind or jump.
Key requirements:
Level tolerance — The foundation should be level over the full footprint of the greenhouse. The specific tolerance should be based on the greenhouse manufacturer’s installation requirements — check the installation manual or ask the supplier for the recommended level tolerance. This is achievable on a prepared soil bed or a concrete slab, but may not be achievable on an existing patio or deck without shimming.
Squareness — The foundation should be square (corner-to-corner diagonal measurements equal). If the foundation is not square, the frame will be forced into a parallelogram shape, and panels that are cut for a square frame will not fit.
Surface flatness — For greenhouses with a base kit, the surface under the base kit should be flat enough that the base kit sits without rocking. Minor irregularities can be shimmed, but large variations require ground preparation.
These requirements should be stated in the instruction manual, with specific measurements. A note that says “install on level ground” is not sufficient. The manual should specify the required level tolerance and squareness requirement based on the product’s design — ask the supplier for these values if they are not documented.
Which Parts Belong in the Greenhouse Kit vs Optional Accessories
The product configuration decision is: what goes in the standard kit, and what is an optional accessory? This depends on the target market and the expected installation surface:

For a product targeting the home garden market, where most installations are on soil or lawn, the standard kit should include the base kit and ground anchors. Hard-surface fixing options can be mentioned in the instructions as available accessories. For a product targeting urban customers (balcony, patio, rooftop), the standard kit may need to include hard-surface fixing hardware, or at minimum the instructions should clearly state what the customer needs to purchase separately.
Questions the Retail Instruction Should Answer
Before the product goes to retail, the instruction manual should answer:
- What foundation types does this greenhouse support? State clearly: soil/lawn, concrete, paving, deck. If the greenhouse is not suitable for hard surfaces without additional accessories, say so.
- Is a base kit included? If yes, state the height and material. If no, state whether one is available as an accessory and what the customer loses by installing without it (ground clearance, anchoring points, level reference).
- What anchoring hardware is included? Ground anchors? Anchor bolts? If the customer is installing on concrete, what do they need to buy?
- What are the leveling requirements? Give specific numbers, not vague guidance.
- What happens if the ground is not level? Provide guidance on how to level soil (dig and fill) and how to shim on hard surfaces. If the greenhouse cannot tolerate uneven ground, state this clearly.
