Leaf Blower Noise Levels: How Buyers Should Compare dB Claims and Test Conditions

A leaf blower listed at “65 dB” and another listed at “75 dB” — which is quieter? Most buyers would say the 65 dB model. But without knowing what kind of decibel measurement was used, at what distance, in what operating mode, and under what test standard, those two numbers are not comparable.

What noise figures actually mean, how to compare them fairly, and why noise matters differently depending on the market and channel — these are the questions that matter when sourcing leaf blowers.

Why One dB Number Is Not Enough

The decibel (dB) is a unit of measurement for sound — but it is not a single, universal number. A leaf blower’s noise can be expressed as sound pressure or sound power, measured at different distances, under different operating modes, using different test standards. Two suppliers can report the same dB number for very different actual noise levels, simply by choosing a different measurement method.

Several variables change the reported number:

  • Measurement type: Sound pressure vs. sound power (explained below)
  • Distance from the source: Measured at 1 meter, 3 meters, 7.5 meters, or another distance
  • Operating mode: Boost/turbo mode, normal mode, or economy mode
  • Nozzle attachment: With or without the blower tube/nozzle installed
  • Test environment: Anechoic chamber, reverberation room, or open field
  • Test standard: ISO 3744, ISO 3741, or a supplier’s internal method

When a supplier writes “noise: 65 dB” on a spec sheet without any of this context, the number is not wrong — but it is not verifiable or comparable. A buyer who compares that number to another supplier’s “75 dB” measured under different conditions is comparing apples to oranges.

Sound Pressure vs Sound Power — The Distinction Buyers Must Understand

These are the two fundamental ways to measure noise, and they are not interchangeable.

Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is what the human ear — or a microphone — actually perceives at a given location. It depends on the distance from the sound source and the surrounding environment. Move farther away, and the sound pressure drops. Stand in a reverberant room, and the sound pressure is higher than in an open field.

Sound Power Level is the total acoustic energy the sound source radiates. It is an intrinsic property of the machine — like wattage on a light bulb. The reference value is 10⁻¹² W. Sound power is a property of the source and does not depend on distance or environment in the same way sound pressure does. However, the measurement method and measurement uncertainty are influenced by the test environment and the standard used — sound power is determined through controlled measurements, not read directly from a meter.

The key implication: a supplier reporting “65 dB” might be reporting sound pressure measured at 7.5 meters in an open field. Another reporting “75 dB” might be reporting sound power. These two numbers are not the same quantity and cannot be directly compared to determine which machine is quieter. Sound power numbers and sound pressure numbers are different measurements — one does not simply indicate a louder or quieter machine than the other.

EU Directive 2000/14/EC (the Outdoor Equipment Noise Emission Directive) requires manufacturers to declare the sound power level — not sound pressure — for outdoor equipment covered by the directive. The current consolidated version is available on EUR-Lex. Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1208 updated the noise measurement methods, with some amendments taking effect from May 22, 2025.

Leaf blowers and leaf collectors are listed under Article 13 of the directive as equipment subject to “noise marking only” — meaning the manufacturer must declare the guaranteed sound power level and mark the product accordingly, but they are not subject to the permissible sound power limits set out in Article 12 for other equipment categories. Buyers should confirm the applicable conformity and marking requirements for their specific product before entering the EU market.

How Boost Mode, Nozzle, Motor Type and Operating Condition Change Reported Noise

The same leaf blower can produce very different noise levels depending on how it is operated.

Operating mode: Some cordless leaf blowers have multiple modes — a normal or economy mode and a boost or turbo mode. Boost mode increases motor speed and airflow, which also increases noise. A noise figure measured in economy mode is not comparable to one measured in boost mode. Buyers should always ask which mode the reported dB figure corresponds to.

Nozzle/tube attachment: The blower tube or nozzle affects airflow direction and turbulence, which can change the noise profile. Some suppliers measure noise with the nozzle installed; others without. Buyers should ask which configuration was used during testing.

Motor type: Brushless and brushed motors may produce different acoustic signatures depending on the specific motor design, controller, and operating point. The motor label alone does not predict the noise result — the actual acoustic profile is model-specific.

Power source: Petrol blowers are typically louder than cordless models. Buyers should not compare noise figures across power sources without noting the difference — the two categories operate in different noise ranges.

When comparing noise figures across suppliers, make sure the following match:

  • Same measurement type (sound pressure or sound power)
  • Same distance from the source
  • Same operating mode
  • Same nozzle/tube configuration
  • Same test standard

If any of these differ, the comparison is not valid.

Why Noise Matters by Channel — Residential, Professional and Regulated Markets

Noise is not just a spec sheet number. It affects where a product can be sold, who will buy it, and whether it will cause problems after the sale.

Residential retail: Residential customers may be sensitive to noise, and many residential areas have local noise ordinances that restrict the hours or decibel levels of outdoor power equipment. Local ordinances and end-user preferences may affect purchase requirements — buyers should verify the noise restrictions in their target markets.

Professional landscaping: Commercial users prioritize power and runtime over quiet operation, but they still operate in environments where noise matters — near offices, hospitals, schools, and residential areas. Professional buyers may need equipment that complies with local noise regulations at job sites.

Regulated markets: The EU’s 2000/14/EC directive requires manufacturers of covered outdoor equipment to declare sound power levels and mark products accordingly. Leaf blowers fall under Article 13 (noise marking only). Buyers should confirm the applicable conformity, marking, and declaration requirements for their specific product and target market before entering the EU.

In the United States, some cities and counties have enacted local leaf blower noise restrictions, including bans on petrol-powered blowers in certain municipalities. These are local regulations, not federal — buyers serving specific US markets should verify the requirements in their target regions.

Occupational noise exposure is a separate consideration. Depending on the noise level and duration of use, operators may be subject to occupational health and safety regulations. Buyers should verify applicable workplace noise requirements in their target market.

Sample Comparison Method — How to Test Noise Fairly

When you have samples from two or more suppliers, you can run a controlled noise comparison without a laboratory. The goal is not to produce a certified number — it is to create a fair, repeatable comparison between samples. This method cannot be used for regulatory compliance declarations — it only produces a relative comparison.

What you need:

  • A sound level meter (a basic consumer-grade meter is sufficient for comparison, not for certification)
  • A consistent test location (outdoors, away from walls and reflective surfaces)
  • A fixed distance from the blower (e.g., 1 meter from the operator position, or a distance approximating the standard you want to compare against)

Test protocol:

  1. Set up both blowers in the same location, same surface (grass, concrete, or bare ground — pick one and keep it consistent).
  2. Install the same nozzle/tube configuration on both.
  3. Run both in the same operating mode (e.g., both in normal mode, or both in boost mode).
  4. Measure at the same distance from each blower.
  5. Record the reading. Take repeated readings at the same position and note the range. Do not rely on a single reading or a simple arithmetic average as a standard method — record the readings and note the meter’s class/grade.
  6. Note the background noise level (ambient). If background noise is high or variable, the comparison may not be reliable. Conduct the test in an environment with sufficiently low and stable background noise. If environmental correction is needed, follow the applicable acoustic measurement method.

Note: this method produces a comparative result between two samples, not a certified measurement. Test distance and method should approximate the standard you want to compare against, but verify the specific test setup required by the applicable standard if certification is needed.
