A sample should become a reference standard — not just a “yes, this one works.”

Illustrative scenario: A buyer approves a string trimmer sample and places a bulk order. When the bulk arrives, a customer complains that debris flies out from under the guard. The buyer measures the bulk guard — it is 2 mm shorter than the sample’s guard. The buyer wants to file a claim, but the approved sample record has no entry for guard dimensions. There is no photo, no measurement, no documented baseline. The supplier says “normal tolerance.” The buyer cannot prove the sample was different. Without a recorded baseline, “the sample was better” is a feeling, not evidence.

When a string trimmer sample arrives and the buyer approves it without systematic documentation, the bulk order has no baseline to compare against. If the bulk units arrive with a different spool, a looser shaft joint or a shorter guard, the buyer has no evidence — only a feeling that “the sample was better.” This article provides a complete, printable sample inspection checklist for string trimmers. 1. Visual and Assembly Check

Before turning the trimmer on, inspect the physical build. Assembly quality is the most reliable indicator of manufacturing consistency — and the easiest thing to document.

2. Shaft and Handle Adjustment

4. Functional Run Test

Run the trimmer under controlled conditions. Record what you observe — do not guess at life expectancy or make claims without a test standard.

5. Power and Accessories

Verify that the power system matches the spec sheet and that all accessories are present and correct.

Why this record matters: When the bulk order arrives, you inspect against this record — not against a fresh set of expectations. If the bulk spool is a different part number, the bulk guard is 2 mm shorter, or the bulk carton is single-wall instead of double-wall, you have the approved sample record to prove the discrepancy.

A Note on AQL and Inspection Standards

ISO 2859-1 is an international standard for acceptance sampling by attributes, indexed by Acceptance Quality Limit (AQL). It provides sampling plans that define how many units to inspect in a batch and how many defects are acceptable. The standard includes switching rules (normal → tightened → reduced) for ongoing supplier relationships.

For buyers: AQL sampling is a useful framework for structuring bulk inspection — but it is not a fixed policy. The specific AQL values, inspection levels and acceptable defect counts should be set by the buyer based on their quality requirements and risk tolerance. Do not adopt a supplier’s “standard AQL” without understanding what defect levels it permits.

If your company has established AQL standards, apply them to bulk inspection. If not, work with your QC provider or inspection team to define an appropriate sampling plan based on order quantity, product risk and your quality requirements. The approved sample record serves as the comparison baseline — but it does not replace a structured sampling plan for bulk inspection.
