The spool will not accept 0.130-inch line — it was designed for 0.095. Three numbers that looked like a strong spec turned out to be a mismatched system. For buyers, the goal is not to pick the largest numbers — it is to specify a matched system that fits the target user and grass conditions.
Cutting Swath: Coverage vs Control
Cutting swath is the width of the cutting path, typically expressed in inches or millimeters. A trimmer with a 22-inch swath covers more ground per pass than one with a 15-inch swath. That much is obvious. What is less obvious is what else changes.
Weight and power draw. All else equal, increasing effective line length or swath can increase load on the motor. The motor needs more torque to maintain speed. On a cordless trimmer, that means more battery drain per minute of use. On a petrol trimmer, it means more fuel consumption. The supplier typically matches the swath to the motor’s power rating — but when you compare suppliers, do not assume that two trimmers with the same swath have the same motor capability. Maneuverability. A wide swath is harder to control along fence lines, around tree bases and in narrow garden borders. For a homeowner with a small yard, a 17-inch swath may be more practical than a 22-inch one. For a commercial landscaper maintaining open lawn edges, the wider swath saves time.
Guard and safety. Verify the guard is the correct approved design for the stated swath, is securely mounted, and the line-cutting blade or guard geometry limits line length as intended. Guards typically do not cover the entire cutting diameter — confirm the guard design is the one approved for the stated swath configuration.
What swath does not tell you: It does not indicate cutting quality, line durability, or how well the trimmer handles thick or wet grass. It is a coverage dimension, not a performance rating.
Line Diameter: Durability vs Load
Line diameter — the thickness of the nylon cutting line — is expressed in inches or millimeters. Ranges vary widely by product class; light-duty handheld models and heavy-duty or walk-behind models may use very different line diameters.

A practical example: a buyer loads 0.130-inch line into a trimmer designed for 0.065-inch line. The feed head seizes — the line is too thick for the spool’s exit holes. The motor overheats trying to drive the heavier line through thick grass. The customer returns the trimmer, believing the product is defective. The defect was not in the tool — it was in the mismatch between line diameter and the system the tool was designed around.
Key point for buyers: Line diameter is not an independent choice. It is a system-matching decision.
Why Swath, Line, Head and Power Must Match
These components form a system. Changing one element without checking the others creates problems that show up as customer complaints, returns and warranty claims.
- Swath ↔ Motor: A wider swath needs more torque. If the motor is underpowered, the trimmer bogs down in thick grass.
- Line diameter ↔ Spool: The spool must be wound with the correct diameter line. Over-thick line will not feed; under-thick line may tangle.
- Line diameter ↔ Feed head: Different feed head designs have different line diameter tolerances. This is a product-specific limit, not an industry-wide standard.

When a supplier offers a “2-in-1” or multi-function trimmer with interchangeable heads, these compatibility constraints multiply. Each head may have its own line diameter range, its own swath and its own spool design. The buyer needs to confirm compatibility for every configuration, not just the default one.
Replacement Line and After-Sales Compatibility
One of the most common after-sales issues with string trimmers is not the motor — it is the line. Customers buy replacement line that does not fit, or they wind the spool incorrectly, or they use a diameter outside the trimmer’s tolerance.
What buyers should confirm with the supplier:
- Recommended line diameter (the spec the trimmer is designed around)
- Minimum and maximum usable line diameter (the range the feed head can handle)
- Replacement spool part number and whether it can be purchased separately
- Whether pre-wound spools are available, or if the user must wind their own
- Recommended line material (round, twisted, multi-sided) — some feed heads work better with specific line profiles
- Whether the feed head accepts aftermarket line or requires proprietary spools
This information should be in the product manual. If the manual does not specify line diameter tolerances, that is a red flag — the buyer will end up answering customer questions the supplier should have answered in the documentation.
