Before approving plant-label packaging, compare its name, count, included items, size cues and claims with the actual contents and matching documents. Fix one retail pack and one artwork revision for the review so that each finding refers to the same version.
Fix the pack and the artwork revision
The check only works against a frozen reference. Before comparing anything, record which retail pack and which artwork revision you are reviewing, so that a later change can be seen rather than assumed.
Record the pack or product reference, the artwork revision, and the date the revision was issued. Where more than one revision exists, identify the one being checked. Keep the approved contents list separate from the contents observed in the actual pack: record the pieces, their count and any included accessories against each reference.
Compare the artwork with both records. If the intended contents are not yet approved, record that gap as unresolved; an observed count alone does not establish what the pack is meant to contain.
The pack-message-to-contents matrix
Use one row for each visible wording or item on the pack, with the exact contents or document reference used for comparison.
| Visible wording / item | Exact actual reference | What to compare | Finding (matched / mismatch / unresolved) | Supported correction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Fill the rows for the pack you are reviewing, and leave out what the pack does not carry. A useful set of rows covers:
- Product name and format: does the wording match the actual product type?
- Printed piece, set or pack count: does the number on the pack equal the count inside?
- Included versus merely shown items: is anything pictured that is not supplied?
- Exact shape and dimensions, with units: are stated sizes the actual sizes, in stated units?
- Material, if claimed: does any material claim match the documented material of this exact model?
- Writing, reuse or weather claims, if used: is each claim supported for this model?
- Language and artwork revision: is the language correct for the market, and is the revision the current one?
- Approved retailer identifier or barcode mapping, if used: does it map to the intended product?
- Information visibility on the actual shelf or peg fixture: can the shopper see the key fields where the pack will actually sit?
Keep included items separate from items shown for context. A plant, a pen, a cord or a pot in a use scene is not automatically supplied; only the contents list decides. If the word "included" appears, it has to match the exact contents, and a pictured prop that is not supplied should not read as part of the pack. For claims, use evidence that matches the pack being reviewed. A material or performance statement on the pack has to match the same model and its supporting evidence. Where evidence is missing, omit the claim rather than borrowing a fact from another label or another product. A display photo is not proof of writing performance or transport strength.
A hypothetical discrepancy example
This example is hypothetical and refers to no real pack.
Suppose the front artwork says 20 plant labels, but a count of the example pack finds 18. For this illustration, assume the name and size cue match their references. Record the count mismatch; do not infer from it whether the artwork or the fill is wrong.
Check the buyer-approved contents target. If it is 18, the proposed correction is to change the printed count to 18 and obtain approval for the revised artwork. If it is 20, restore the fill to 20 and retain the artwork revision if no artwork change is needed. If the target is unconfirmed, leave the correction unresolved. In either resolved case, record the approved action and recheck the actual pack against the applicable artwork and contents references.
Record the correction and recheck
Once a mismatch or an unsupported claim is found, it needs a record, and the record needs a final check against the actual pack.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Pack / product and checked artwork revision | The exact pack and the revision reviewed |
| Panel and current text or image | Where the wording or image sits, and what it says |
| Actual contents / document reference | The contents list or document the pack is checked against |
| Exact mismatch or unsupported claim | What does not line up, stated precisely |
| Proposed supported correction | The change that brings the pack into line |
| Buyer approval and applicable artwork reference | Who approved the correction; retained or revised artwork reference |
| Final actual pack checked against those references | Record the pack recheck against the approved contents and applicable artwork |
Approval here means artwork and content review only. It is not regulatory approval, not product-performance certification and not shipment certification. Those are separate, and this review does not stand in for them.
